Safety Advice

NEVER SEND MONEY FOR A VEHICLE YOU HAVEN’T SEEN

View and check the vehicle and documents before handing over any money. The only exception would be if you have paid to reserve the vehicle through Auto Trader’s Online Order journey or arranged a distance sale from one of our advertising dealers, who offer this service. If you pay for a deposit or click and collect/home delivery, consider using a credit card as this offers additional protection.

KEEP YOUR KEYS SAFE DURING VIEWINGS

Never leave a potential buyer alone with the vehicle, give them the keys, or let them borrow the car documents. Never allow unsupervised access to the engine or allow yourself to be distracted during a viewing of your vehicle.

LOOK OUT FOR SCAM CALLS, EMAILS AND TEXTS

We’ll never call you on the protected number on your advert or ask you to login to your Auto Trader account via email or SMS. Only enter your login details where you see a padlock icon in your browser window.

Seller Alert - During a Viewing

We are warning sellers of a scam that involves potential buyers trying to negotiate a lower price for the car, by tampering with its engine or exhaust. The scam involves secretly pouring oil into the coolant reservoir, exhaust or over the engine in an attempt to negotiate a lower price claiming the engine is damaged.

  • We’re aware of scammers attempting to get personal information and payment details by impersonating Auto Trader and contacting private sellers saying they’ve been overcharged or you have paid twice. We’ll never contact you via the protected number on your advert. Never give out bank or card details to an unsolicited caller. If a caller asks for a copy of your V5C logbook prior to viewing your vehicle, we would advise you not to disclose it. If you’d like to check a call is genuine, please call or email us.

Auto Trader has been informed of emails received by Private Sellers asking them to provide and pay for vehicle checks for the vehicle they are selling. They are then directed to dubious vehicle check sites with inflated prices. It is the responsibility of the buyer to carry out their own vehicle checks and where they do they should use a trusted source for their vehicle data such as Auto Trader. Read more

Scammers may also target consumers based on interactions with fake adverts on other websites. Stay safe: Never share personal details or send money in response to unsolicited calls or emails.

They contact you from outside your area contacting to purchase a vehicle without sight of the item. Learn the red flags – When making a purchase they offer several credit card numbers that are declined – use a Bank Identification Number (BIN) checker to verify a UK card issuer – A request is received to register the vehicle to another name at another unknown address – The vehicle is to be collected by a courier arranged by the caller – Insist on ID – request a photo text message with a photo ID card held up to confirm the identity of the person calling Police are starting to see many of these transactions and it can be several weeks before you are made aware of a chargeback on the full amount of the sale. At this point, you lose the money and the car is likely lost also.
